Plot accumulation across the cycle
List when each upstream batch or flow arrives and when the next operation draws product. Over each interval, inventory change equals inflow minus outflow. Add those changes cumulatively to locate the highest and lowest inventory points.
Include planned pauses, sample release and cleaning states. A line that balances over a day can still exceed the buffer during a short filler stop. Use the realistic operating sequence rather than smoothing every operation into one average flow.
Convert inventory to a working range
Separate the inventory swing from minimum operating level, free space and any agitation constraints. The source outlet and pump may require product above a low level; mixing may require a different minimum batch. Confirm these conditions with the configured vessel.
Convert mass to volume only using an appropriate density basis for the product. Keep that basis stated in the calculation. The final supplier drawing should identify the usable levels, not just a nominal vessel capacity.
| Quantity | How to establish it |
|---|---|
| Inventory change | Inflow minus outflow for each operating interval |
| Maximum swing | Highest minus lowest cumulative inventory |
| Minimum inventory | Outlet, transfer and agitation requirements |
| Upper allowance | Free space and defined surge conditions |
| Product constraint | Permitted holding conditions and traceable disposition |
Assess product holding separately
Volume does not establish the age of every portion in the tank. Define the actual fill / empty sequence and the method used to track lot and product history. A nominal volume divided by flow can be a preliminary residence estimate, but it is not evidence of every particle history.
The food-safety and product team establishes permitted holding conditions and actions after interruptions. Extra storage should not be used to hide an unresolved downstream reliability problem. Stop logic may be a better part of the design than more inventory.
Carry the balance into equipment selection
Request a proposal that states usable volume, level actions, agitation duty, outlet arrangement and cleaning method. Check the transfer system at low source level and the response to a full receiver. Include the proposed schedule in the design review.
For batch blending, size the complete batch cycle and buffer handover separately. For continuous treatment, define the conditions under which feed stops or diverts. No stock vessel size or universal holding limit is recommended here.
Questions from equipment buyers
Can I size a tank from kg per day?
You also need when product arrives, when it leaves and the usable vessel range. The daily total does not show accumulation during pauses.
Is nominal tank volume the buffer capacity?
No. Minimum level, free space and operating constraints reduce the usable range.
Does volume divided by flow establish safe holding?
It is only a preliminary residence estimate under stated assumptions. The actual sequence and product-specific holding assessment still need definition.
